So Dubai International Capital is an international investment company with a primary focus on public and private equity world-wide.
It has been in the news in the UK over recent months, in 2007-2008, due to its great interest in purchasing Liverpool Football Club from its current American millionaire owners, George Gillett and Thomas Hicks. At the time of writing, Dubai International Capital [DIC] had failed to reach a deal with the owners, although talks had taken place.
It seems that most Liverpool football fans would welcome DIC as a buyer, in order to bring vital extra investment into the football club.
A much larger stadium is one of the aims of the club, because the current capacity at Anfield does not compare with the rival Manchester United FC's larger capacity at Old Trafford, not too far away.
Dubai International Capital operates internationally through three divisions:-
[a] Global Buy-outs:
Focussed on LBOs primarily in Europe, but also in Asia and North America.
[b] Middle East and North Africa [MENA] Investments:
DIC manages a broad investment programme across the Middle East and North Africa, including LBOs funds and co-investments; infrastructure, growth and development capital.
[c] Public Equities:
Focussed on investment in publicly quoted companies through its DFSA regulated $2 billion dollar Global Strategic Equities Fund, by acquiring stakes in mega-class companies.
Companies in which DIC has a financial stake, to varying extents, include:-
- The Tussauds Group
- HSBC Bank
- Daimler AG
- EADS [Europe's largest aircraft and defence manufacturer]
- Mauser [German packaging company]
- Rivoli Group
- Doncaster Group
- Jordan Dubai Capital
DIC has also recently set up a joint investment fund with China's First Eastern Investment Group. It will be known as China Dubai Capital.
Sir Richard Branson has also been in talks with DIC regarding joint takeover of airline firm BMI, although nothing was finalised at time of writing.
Through Dubai International Capital [DIC], the Government of Dubai is therefore investing in leading companies throughout the world and gaining great global influence, as well as a healthy fiscal return.
It is becoming an important global financial player by putting Dubai's oil wealth to good use.
